Clarity Before Change: The Key to a Career You Actually Want
Do your Sunday Scaries start before Sunday? Do you find yourself dreading Mondays, scrolling job boards late at night, or daydreaming about a completely different path? If so, you’re not alone. Many of my clients come to me at a crossroads:
- Some have been laid off and want to use this transition as a chance to pivot
- Others are still employed but deeply unhappy in their roles and unsure what’s next
The common thread? They feel stuck knowing they want something different but not knowing how to define or pursue it. That’s where career clarity work comes in.
Why Career Clarity Matters
Clarity is the foundation for any successful career move. Without it, people tend to apply for jobs at random, chase what they think they “should” do, or stay frozen in indecision. But when you have a clear picture of your skills, strengths, values, and interests, you’re able to:
- Identify roles that align with your natural abilities
- Spot opportunities that fuel, rather than drain, your energy
- Communicate your value with confidence in interviews and networking
- Create a career path that feels intentional
My Approach (No Expensive Assessments Required)
While there are plenty of formal assessments out there, I’ve found that the most valuable insights come from thoughtful conversations and targeted reflection. Instead of sending my clients through a series of costly tests, I use my own set of questions and exercises that uncover just as much clarity, value, and impact, without the added expense.
During career clarity coaching we explore:
- Interests & Passions: What excites you? What kind of work and activities do you naturally gravitate toward?
- Skills & Strengths: What do others consistently rely on you for? Where do you shine the brightest?
- Values & Non-Negotiables: What matters most in your work environment? What can you not compromise on?
- Weaknesses & Skill Gaps: What feels draining or difficult, and what might you want to develop further?
This process often leads clients to surprising realizations: sometimes toward a more advanced leadership role, sometimes toward a new industry, and occasionally toward a complete career change.
Tips to Start Finding Career Clarity on Your Own
If you’re feeling stuck right now, here are a few simple but powerful steps to start uncovering your next chapter:
- Make Two Lists: Energizers vs. Drainers
Over the course of a week, jot down tasks and interactions that light you up versus those that leave you exhausted or anxious. Patterns often reveal what type of work you should be leaning toward or away from. - Ask Trusted Colleagues What They See in You
Sometimes others can spot your strengths more easily than you can. Ask a few people what they think you’re especially good at. Their answers might surprise you. - Define Your Career Non-Negotiables
Think about the conditions you need to thrive: growth opportunities, mission-driven work, supportive leadership, mentorship, flexible hours. Write them down. These become filters for your next move.
Career clarity doesn’t come overnight, but it also doesn’t have to require months of spinning your wheels. With the right questions, reflection, and guidance, you can move from stuck to clear, and take confident steps toward a career that excites and sustains you.
If you’re ready to explore what’s possible for you, I’d love to help you uncover the clarity and direction you need!
